The match ends when the referee blows the whistle. Napoli stays.

BEYOND NINETY MINUTES

A sense of belonging.

Football is a sport; Napoli is affection. It’s talking for hours with Dad, with friends, with people who support other teams. It’s knowing that 38 times a year, plus the cups, the world stops for 90 minutes. Plus stoppage time. It’s superstition, which I don’t believe in, but which works. It’s the topic that breaks the ice in a meeting. It’s reading the transfer news in summer.

I’ve followed them from Bermuda, Hawaii, Tokyo, Bali, Los Angeles… The places and times change, but the clocks stop and we watch the match.

Matches and memories

30 APRIL 2023

Napoli–Salernitana 1–1

An atmosphere of celebration, friendship and togetherness. Inter’s goals against Lazio had made us feel that the title was within reach. And then the team bus arriving at the stadium.

23 MAY 2025

Napoli–Cagliari 2–0

Winning the title on the final day. I’d seen it in films, but I never thought it would happen to us. A week of shock after Parma–Napoli and Inter–Lazio. And above all, so much Pedro Pedro Pedro Peeeeeeeeeeeedro.

27 SEPTEMBER 2011 · CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Napoli–Villarreal 2–0

After San Benedetto del Tronto, Gela, Lanciano, Sassari, Giulianova… back in the Champions League.

19 DECEMBER 2010

Napoli–Lecce 1–0

A match I wasn’t at, but wish I had been. Napoli–Lecce, 1–0. Cavani’s goal, with Auriemma’s commentary.

My first match at the stadium was Napoli–Foggia on 15 December 1991. I was in the Distinti section with my father, Massimo and Lorenzo De Siena. It ended 3–3.
